Maintenance Technician

Maintenance Technician I, II or III 

 

SALARY - Pay Range $35,451-52,090 

 

PURPOSE OF CLASS:  General maintenance of town properties and utility systems with minimal supervision.

 

PRIMARY TASKS:

  • Serves as team leader for subordinates.
  • Maintains gutters, street signs and streets. 
  • Cleans ditches, gutters, culverts and other drainage structures.
  • Maintains grounds and landscaping.
  • Maintains park including cleaning restrooms, walkways and trashcans.
  • Assists with various special projects, including large-scale community events.
  • Assists in paving streets and potholes.
  • Assists in maintenance and repair of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Reads water meters.
  • Assists in the collection of household solid waste.
  • Collects leaves and limbs.
  • Maintains good relationships with the public through respect for individual property.
  • Performs other maintenance tasks as required.
  • Drives smaller vehicles.
  • Trains to drive larger vehicles that require CDL certifications.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:  Small dump truck, Backhoe, Garbage Truck, Tractor, Bush hog, Lawnmower, Weed Eater, Edger, Blower, Sewer jetter, hand tools and other equipment as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:  This position reports to the Public Works Superintendent.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is primarily out of doors and involves general physical hazards of working with equipment in operation; exposure to inclement weather conditions; and involves lifting, crawling and climbing in performing the operation of equipment or as a laborer.

QUALIFICATIONS OF CLASS:

Education:  High school graduation or GED required.

Experience:  Some experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of general practices applied in care and safe operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of state laws pertaining to operation of equipment on highways.
  • Skill in operation of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to varied climatic conditions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work for long periods of time.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to cooperate and work well as a team member.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to respect public and personal property and handle it with care.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and ability to acquire CDL certifications to operate a municipal garbage truck.
